An essay is a literary composition that deliver the author’s main argument, but often the definition is so vague, even overlapping with those of an essay, a report, a book, a newspaper, and even a short fictional work. Essays have historically always been classified as either formal or informal. For example, William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” is an essay, because it combines personal experience and sophisticated literary devices into a dialogue. “The Heart of Darkness” by Charles Dickens is an informal essay due to its highly fractured structure, even though Dickens includes many narrative elements within his novel.
Formal essays are those written for college or university grading but often written as one of several required reading assignments. They must be written to fit the specific assignment, and often they are wordy and difficult to understand for a non-linguistics student. The purpose of this kind of essay is to assess a writer’s knowledge, while conveying its intelligence and sophistication. The only difference between a formal essay and other kinds of essays is that they are required to follow a specific format. These formats are also generally not allowed to deviate from the main topic, which makes them somewhat less interesting to a reader who has not completed the assigned reading.
A formal essay normally consists of three parts: the introduction, the thesis, and the conclusion. The introduction is the section that introduces the topic of the essay, provides background information about it, and sets up the main discussion. The thesis is the body of the essay, which is designed to show the author’s main point or argument, discuss the background information, support the thesis, and conclude.
Besides an introduction, the thesis is the most important part of your essay writing process. It may also serve as the basis for your other documents. For example, if you’re writing a research paper, you’ll need to have a secondary thesis, which will outline the main points of your research. In order to write a five-paragraph expository essay, there are five paragraphs; the introduction, the body of the essay, the conclusion, and the conclusion.
The introduction and the body paragraphs of your essay will introduce your thesis and provide background information about it. The conclusion is the most important part of the essay. It presents your thesis statement in full, as well as any additional research you’ve used to support it.
